20th Home Tour!

Can you believe it?

It is the 20th Holiday Tour of Historic Homes in Flamingo Park, presented by the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association. Save Sunday, December 4 from 5-8 p.m. for this grand West Palm Beach tradition.

Flamingo Park is a neighborhood of historic homes, many in the Spanish Mission and Mediterranean Revival style, built during the 1920s boom era.

The public is invited to tour nine beautifully appointed historic homes and gardens decorated for the holidays, followed by a homemade holiday dessert reception and candlelight concert at 8:15 p.m.

Tastings from some of the area’s finest caterers and restaurants, along with complimentary beverages, will be provided for tour guests in each of the homes and gardens.

A special addition to this year’s tour will be presentations and displays by the West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Division and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.

One of the homes on the tour, a two-story Mediterranean-revival home built in 1925 and owned by Barbara Marshall and C.J. Walker, was also on the inaugural Flamingo Park Holiday Historic Home Tour in 1990.  Other homes include the historic “Studstill Mansion” on Kanuga Drive, now owned by Gregg and Rebecca Weiss, along with the newly-remodeled home of Ed Zielenski, theone-time home of former Palm Beach County Sheriff Heidtman, on Sunset Road.

The tour is suitable for adults only – no children allowed.

Ticket and tour map distribution will be in the 700 block of Claremore Drive, located five blocks north of Belvedere Road between Lake and Georgia avenues in West Palm Beach.

Trolley service along the route will be available during tour.  Remember to wear comfortable shoes and no high heels as they mar the wood floors.

Proceeds benefit the programs and services of the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association.

COST:  Tickets are $25 before Dec. 4; $30 day of the tour.

Three nominees for board seats

Three persons were nominated to fill the three vacancies in the 2012 election for the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors. The slate will be presented to the FPNA membership at the Annual Meeting and Election on Tuesday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. at The Armory Art Center. They are:

• Linda Cullen, who resides at 828 Biscayne Drive, is a Realtor and has served previously on the Board of Directors, including several terms as president. She has been active in nearly every aspect of the neighborhood association, including historic preservation, airport issues, the home tour and garden tours and the 500 block committee and is chair of the cookbook committee. She said she has a desire "to give back" so is interested in rejoining the FPNA Board.

• Andrea Davis resides at 700 Kanuga Drive and is a registered nurse. She is completing her first two-year term on the FPNA Board of Directors and has served as code enforcement chair and House of the Month chair and is an active member of the environmental committee. She has lived in Flamingo Park for 21 years and wishes to remain on the board to "continue to serve the community."

• Margie Yansura resides at 714 Claremore Drive and is a public relations consultant. She has served for three years on the FPNA Board, serving as president for the past two years. She has been a member of FPNA since its inception and helped establish both the Holiday Historic Home Tour and the Garden Tour. She wants to continue to serve on the board and to continue her involvement with the home tour and other special events as well as writing the Flamingo Flyer. The FPNA board members fulfilling the second year of their two-year terms are: Brian Denney, Linda Fraser, Jeremy Pyle and Joe Quinty.

Preuss leaves board post

Vice President Victoria Preuss, 735 Upland Road, is leaving the board after serving for four years. The FPNA Board of Directors and association members extend a hearty "thank you" to Vic for a job well done! She has rarely missed a board meeting, has taken excellent minutes during her tenure as secretary, suggested and organizes the popular yard sales and edits the Flamingo Flyer. She and Tim Rivers hosted their home on the inaugural 1991 Home Tour and four more times in the years since, as well as a couple of garden tours. As members of the cookbook committee, the pair edited, photographed and designed the award- nominated book. A resident since 1984, Vic intends to stay active and will continue as Flyer editor and Yard Sale coordinator.

Street Tree Master Plan

The Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association is embarking on a program to replace trees in the city swale in front of homes in our neighborhood, using a portion of the funds raised through our annual home tour and other events.

The amount of the FPNA contribution depends upon the total number of trees to be replaced, but will likely be limited to $25 per tree.

Costs for trees are:

$25 for a coconut palm tree in a seven-gallon container.

$49 for a foxtail palm (6- to 8-feet tall)

$40 for mahogany (15-gallon container, 10-feet tall)

$40 for live oak (20-gallon size, 9-feet tall)

FPNA has an established neighborhood landscaping plan, where certain streets are designated for palm trees or hardwoods. A JPG of that plan is below, and homeowners are encouraged, though not required, to follow that plan in selecting the tree(s) to be planted in their swale.

In order to receive tree replacement assistance from FPNA, the homeowner must sign an agreement that he or she will:

Plant or pay for the planting of the tree (FPNA is negotiating a neighborhood-wide tree planting agreement at discounted prices)

Pay for any difference between the price of the tree and the FPNA contribution and

Provide proper care for the tree. (Care instructions will be provided to the homeowners.)

If you are missing a tree (or a maximum of two) in the city swale in front of your home and you would like the assistance of FPNA in getting a replacement, please contact Jeff Yansura, FPNA Environmental Chair, at bpw714@hotmail.com or at 561-267-0833 by Nov. 1.

2011 Garden Tour

At this time this year's Garden Tour has been cancelled due to the lack of availabilty of the homes with top-notch gardens. We plan to do a tour next Spring when we hope more of the great homes should be availble for access.
