Nominations for FPNA board now open

Sunday, March 06, 2011 10:41:10 PM

Elections for the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors will be held at the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 29, 6:30 p.m. at the Armory Art Center.

This is one week later than previously advertised due to notice requirements in the new bylaws.

Previously, all seven board positions were elected annually. The new bylaws created staggered two-year terms.

In this first election with the new format, four board seats are up for election to a two-year term.

The seats of three board members currently serving two-year terms will be up for election next year.

Candidates for the board must be property owners in the neighborhood and must have full-membership dues paid up to date.

I am sending out the nomination form in an e-mail blast, but if you need to receive a form in print, please contact me.

The form must be completed and returned to the FPNA Post Office box (on the form); or can be e-mailed to me; or can be left in my front-door mail slot at 714 Claremore.

But whatever method you choose,
the form must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18.

Although I have been active in the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association since its inception, I had not served on the board until two years ago. With my three children now grown, I decided it was time to get more involved.

I have found serving on the board to be a very fulfilling experience. We meet once a month for about 90 minutes to conduct neighborhood business, and work individually on projects throughout the month, depending upon our time availability and personal interests.

You get to know more of your neighbors and learn a great deal about the city services available to our neighborhood.

We have a great pool of talent with the current board and look forward to others stepping forward this year to offer their time and talents.

I encourage you to nominate yourself, secure in the knowledge that a two-year term is not a lifelong commitment.

Board officers — president, vice president, treasurer and secretary — are filled by the board among its members after the general election. And under the new bylaws, officers cannot hold the same post for more than two consecutive years.

This encourages new board leadership at least every two years, which I think is healthy for our association.

So please, place your name in nomination and join the long list of neighbors who have served Flamingo Park with distinction.

President’s Q & A

Sunday, May 16, 2010 7:40:28 PM

In order to keep residents as informed as possible, I am sharing answers to questions recently posed to me or to the board by our neighbors. If you have a question related to the neighborhood, let us help you find the answer and share it in this space in the next Flyer. — Margie Yansura

Quick answers to a few queries:
Will all of the streets in Flamingo Park be restriped?
Yes, the city is currently restriping all of the through streets in Flamingo Park.

When will Flamingo Park receive the new trash receptacles already in use throughout most of the city?
According to the City Public Works Department, it will be at least late this year before our neighborhood receives the new city trash receptacles, due in part to budget shortfalls.

What is planned to replace the now closed Winn Dixie?
No plans for any replacement store have been submitted to the city for the site at this time.  FPNA will continue to monitor the situation and will apprise residents of any news we hear.

Is the Kitten Club on Belvedere now closed?
Yes; however another adult entertainment club is opening in its place.

Why didn’t FPNA stage a Garden Tour this spring?
There was not sufficient interest expressed by residents willing to put their gardens on a tour, and the prolonged cold caused significant cosmetic blight to our tree stock, so the FPNA did not present a Garden Tour this spring.
We would like to resume this traditional event next spring, so start sprucing up your property now!

Introduction

Sunday, May 16, 2010 7:39:40 PM

A few words of introduction...

If we have not had the pleasure of meeting before, I’m Margie Yansura, a 30-year-resident of Flamingo Park, and the new president of the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association.

I live at 714 Claremore Drive, the third historic home my husband, Jeff, and I have restored in Flamingo Park since 1980.
Jeff and I raised our family here and have been involved in many aspects of the neighborhood for the past three decades.
I will do my best to well represent the interests of our neighborhood and to be of service to Flamingo Park residents during my tenure.

Joining me on the FPNA Board of Directors this year are:

 • Vice President Patti Lodge, a water resources engineer who resides at 822 Flamingo Drive;
 • Treasurer Rebecca Weiss, a community activist who sailed the world for four years before settling in Flamingo Park in 2005 at 615 Kanuga  with her husband, Gregg;
• Secretary Victoria Preuss, a former Sun-Sentinel commentary page editor, designer of Flamingo Park’s Create A Stir! cookbook and now editor of the Flamingo Flyer, who has lived since 1984 at 735 Upland Road with her partner, photographer Tim Rivers;
• Andrea Davis, a registered nurse who resides at 700 Kanuga Drive and has taken on the chairmanship of both the House of the Month and Code committees;
• Brian Denney, an attorney who lives at 806 Flamingo with his wife, Rosemary, who helped organize last year’s smash hit Roaring ’20s party; and
• William Waters, an architect, interior designer and the former historic planner for the city of West Palm Beach, who resides in the home he has owned since 1992 at 745 Kanuga.

Board contact info is always on the back page of the Flamingo Flyer, so please contact any — or all — of us with questions or concerns you have about the neighborhood.
